West Ham v Chelsea: Will Local Derby Prove a Test for League Leaders?

Diego Costa

League leaders Chelsea have been so dominant in recent weeks that this game may seem like a foregone conclusion but, after a poor start that saw them flirting with relegation at one point, West Ham have improved in recent weeks and should provide a tough test on Monday night.

The Hammers have home advantage too but the odds setters are firmly siding with the visitors on this one.

Match Odds

Ahead of the game, Antonio Conte’s men lead the market and can be backed for the win at a best of 8/13 with a number of bookies including Paddy Power and Coral. Chelsea have won four of their last six matches, drawing two so with that unbeaten record, it’s no shock that they are favourites despite conceding home advantage.

West Ham have certainly been more competitive of late and have won three of their last six, losing only once so some punters will definitely see some value in their top price of 11/2 with Bet365. Meanwhile, the draw completes the result betting at best odds of 16/5 with Bet365 once again.

Based on form alone you would feel that West Ham have a chance here but let’s look at the stats a little further. The Hammers have a weak defence that can concede heavily against the better teams – 5 times to Arsenal and 3 to Spurs. Chelsea, meanwhile, have only conceded more than one goal on one solitary occasion in their last 20 matches.

Overall, it all points to a Chelsea win.

Individual Goal Scorer

If you agree with the assessment that Chelsea will win this match but aren’t terribly excited by odds of 8/13, you could look for some new customer, enhanced odds offers or you could just head for the side markets.

Goal Scorer betting is always popular and here we find Diego Costa as favourite to open the scoring at 7/2 with Betway. The Spanish international has been a controversial figure once again this season but he is performing on the pitch and after scoring last weekend in the win over Swansea, Costa is a good tip here.

Other options include second favourite Eden Hazard who is back on top form after a poor campaign in 2015/16. The Belgian is best priced at 11/2 with Bet365 to score the first goal but may be a better option in the anytime market at 7/4 with either Bet365 or BetFred.

As for West Ham, they have yet another injury concern over Andy Carroll so their most interesting name in the first goal scorer betting is that of Andre Ayew who is quoted at best odds of 12/1 with Boylesports.

Ayew was West Ham’s saviour last weekend, hitting the equaliser against Watford and is their most likely option to find the net this weekbut once again, he is a better selection in the anytime market at a top price of 7/1 with BetFred.

Other Side Bets

We’ve seen how miserly Chelsea can be in defence but West Ham will play this game with an attacking mindset. There is no point in sitting back and letting Chelsea come at you and the Hammers know they will need to score in order to get anything out of this game.

With that in mind, Both Teams to Score could be a good addition to your betslip at odds of 19/20 with 10Bet while the Overs and Unders market will also get plenty of attention on Monday.

Over 2.5 goals is quoted at best odds of 22/25 with MarathonBet but we think you can be a little braver here and bet over the 3.5 line at a best of 9/4 with BetBright.

For the neutral fan, it should be a night of high entertainment and in the UK we can all enjoy the live coverage provided by Sky on Monday. As for the outcome, it is so hard to see past Chelsea who are in title-winning form so we’re concentrating on the side betting for this highly anticipated London Derby.

Best Bets:

  • Diego Costa to score first at 7/2 with Betway
  • Eden Hazard to score anytime at 7/2 with Bet365
  • Over 3.5 goals at 9/4 with BetBright
