Scotland v England: Auld Enemies Clash in Group F
If you’re an English or Scottish football fan, this is a highly anticipated game that comes around all too rarely these days. In previous decades, the Home Internationals brought these two together on an annual basis but now we have to rely on World Cup or European Championships to pit England and Scotland together.
So, Saturday evening’s game at Hampden Park should be one to savour for both sets of supporters but which way will it go? Let’s see if the bookies have the answer.
The Scots haven’t beaten the English at their National Stadium since 1985 and that’s one reason why the hosts are the outside bet at a top price of 5/1 with MarathonBet. Gareth Southgate’s England will therefore start as favourites at best odds of 8/11 with William Hill and BetFred while the draw completes this result market at a best of 56/19 with 10Bet.
The two teams met at Wembley last November for the reverse fixture with England running out 3-0 winners on what was a comfortable night in the end. It wasn’t necessarily a comprehensive scoreline but it did help to underline the gulf in quality between these two sides.
Scotland are a battling outfit but while they take their players from the SPL and the Championship in England, the English themselves are packed with some of the best talent from the elite leagues across Europe. A surprise should never be ruled out but England at their best will have enough quality to take the three points.
Individual Goal Scorers
As you would expect, English players dominate the goal scoring markets with Harry Kane the favourite to open the scoring at 7/2 with bet365 and Paddy Power. As the Premier League Golden Boot winner, Tottenham’s Kane was in supreme form at the end of the 2016/17 campaign and is an obvious favourite.
With Jamie Vardy injured, Bournemouth’s new signing Jermain Defoe may well start the game and he can be backed at a top price of 4/1 with bet365 and BetFred to score first. Marcus Rashford follows at 9/2 with BetFred and BetBright while Dele Alli could be a good outside option at a value price of 6/1 with Paddy Power and Winner Sports.
The first name from a Scottish perspective is that of Leigh Griffiths who is quoted at 9/1 with bet365 and SkyBet to score first. Celtic striker Griffiths scored 18 goals for the Bhoys last season but has yet to score in 12 full Scottish internationals.
A better option therefore could be Chris Martin who has two goals in World Cup qualification and is at an excellent best price of 11/1 with bet365 to open the scoring.
Overall, the tempter here is Jermain Defoe but, as we’re not sure whether Southgate will start with Defoe or Rashford, we’ll take the safer option of the new Bournemouth striker for an anytime goal at 13/8 with 32Red.
Other Side Bets
Despite being top of their group, England have scored just eight goals in five qualifying matches while Scotland have found the net seven times across the same number of games. Those stats do not necessarily point to a goal glut in Glasgow on Friday evening so the total goals at under the 2.5 line may appeal to some at a best of 14/19 with 10Bet.
We think that with Harry Kane restored to fitness and Jermain Defoe also on the mark for England in his previous game, there should be enough to take it narrowly over that 2.5 line and this represents our second tip of the day at a top price of 141/100 with Marathonbet.
The popular Both Teams to Score option would come in for this game at 13/10 with 10Bet but having taken some short prices for our first two tips, we’ll be a shade braver and back a correct score of Scotland 1 England 3 which is on offer at 16/1 with bet365 and Ladbrokes.
Hopefully the game will live up to its billing and be a competitive and fiery affair. As for the result, England are away from home but player-for-player, there is simply too much quality in their squad to allow Scotland to get anything from this match.
- Jermain Defoe to score anytime at 13/8 with 32Red
- Over 2.5 goals at 141/100 with MarathonBet.
- Correct Score of Scotland 1 England 3 at 16/1 with bet365
