Schalke 04 vs Manchester City: Comfortable Night for Pep’s men?
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City weren’t always dominant in the group stages of this season’s Champions League but the side did enough to top their section. The reward is what looks to be a fairly comfortable Round of 16 tie against Germany’s Schalke 04 and with City away in the first leg, progression is in their hands.
Schalke will need to take a decent advantage if they are to have any chance of making it through to the quarter finals so what do the bookies make of Wednesday night’s game?
This is one of the clearest markets of all in this round and, despite conceding home advantage, Manchester City are big favourites to win on the night at best industry odds of just 3/10 with BetFred. The draw is the next available option at 60/11 with Unibet while a win for Schalke 04 is out at a top price of 11/1 with Coral and Ladbrokes.
If we move over to the To Qualify betting, things are even clearer: Manchester City are available at tiny best odds of 1/16 with Ladbrokes to make it through to the Quarter Finals while Schalke are out at 10/1 with SportingBet to progress.
The most obvious point to note is that while Manchester City should win in 90 minutes, there is precious little value in that odds on price. After a stutter in the Premier League either side of Christmas, Pep’s men look to be bang in form and are likely to take a handy lead back to the Etihad.
If you like your profits to be modest ones, by all means get behind City but we’ll move on in search of better value elsewhere.
Individual Goal Scorers
Sergio Aguero is the man in form and after grabbing a hat trick in that big win over Chelsea, the Argentine is favourite to score the first goal at best odds of 3/1 with BetFred. Manchester City players dominate the first goalscorer betting with Gabriel Jesus coming in at a top price of 18/5 with 10Bet and Unibet followed by Raheem Sterling at 17/4 with 888Sport.
Even City substitutes get in ahead of Schalke’s starting XI with youngster Phil Foden available at 10/1 with BetBright and SportPesa. That seems an unlikely shout so we could look instead at David Silva at a best of 17/2 with 888Sport and RedZoneSports, Kevin De Bruyne at a top price of 9/1 with BetFred or Ilkay Gundogan at 10/1 with Unibet and SportPesa.
We move all the way down to Ahmed Kutucu who becomes the first Schalke player to enter the fray. He can be picked up at best odds of 14/1 with BetBright and Black Type and he’s a young, raw striker with two goals in his first six league games for the club.
Other players that you may want to consider here include Mark Uth at 15/1 with BetFred or Fabian Delph who is out at 20/1 with Betway.
Sergio Aguero is the obvious favourite but we’ll switch to the anytime market and take a punt on David Silva. The midfielder is a source of important goals for the club and on a night when City are expected to find the net with regularity, odds of 11/4 with 888Sport and Unibet for a strike in 90 minutes seem like reasonable value.
Other Side Bets
The fact that Schalke players feature so low down on the list of goal scorers doesn’t offer much confidence for the Both Teams to Score bet. If you do want to take it, it’s available at odds of 3/4 with Black Type but that still seems short at an odds on figure.
We do think that Schalke will find the net and that they will contribute to a high total of goals on the night. With that in mind, you could look to play a little safe and take best odds of 5/9 with SportNation and RedZoneSports for Over 2.5 goals or, go a shade braver and back over the 3.5 line at 11/8 with William Hill.
We do like a correct score bet here so, for a smaller wager, we’ll be looking at a 3-1 win for Manchester City which is on offer at a top price of 43/4 with SportPesa.
It’s a game where value is tough to come by unless you feel that Schalke 04 can really upset the market. Manchester City looked sluggish at times against Newport before eventually landing four second half goals but overall form is devastating. The Germans could be in for a tough night so we’ll avoid the short prices in the result market and look to the following tips to lead to a profitable evening.
- David Silva to score at any time at 11/4 with 888Sport
- Over 3.5 Goals at 11/8 with William Hill
- Correct Score of Schalke 04 1 Manchester City 3 at 43/4 with SportPesa
