Real Madrid v PSG: Expect a Tight First Leg Between European Giants
It’s been a difficult start to the season for Real Madrid and while they would have expected to be challenging Barcelona for the domestic title in Spain, in reality they are batting for fourth and a place in next season’s Champions League.
Of course, they can retain their place in the tournament for 2018/19 by winning this year’s edition and having won the trophy in three of the last four seasons, you wouldn’t necessarily bet against Zinedine Zidane’s men. However, their form will be a concern as they reach the knockout stage and a tie against an in-form Paris St-Germain.
Real finished second in Group H behind Spurs but are favourites to win the first leg at best odds of 153/100 with MarathonBet. PSG, who topped a difficult section ahead of Bayern Munich, are available at a top price of 19/10 with William Hill while the draw completes things at a best of 14/5 with Stan James and 188Bet.
Remember, those are the prices for the result in 90 minutes and don’t include the second leg but it’s a good time to quickly check on the To Qualify market. This time we have a clear favourite with Paris St-Germain leading the way at best odds of 8/11 with Coral and Sun Bets to go through to the next round while Real Madrid are very much the outsiders at a top price of 23/17 with 188Bet.
Form does favour the French side with four straight wins but there is some good news for Real fans after they, and Cristiano Ronaldo in particular, found their scoring touch in a 5-2 victory over Real Sociedad at the weekend.
Individual Goal Scorers
It’s a tough one to call so we’ll come back to the result betting at the end, after we’ve looked at the players who can win it for their respective teams. Ronaldo scored a hat trick in that win over Sociedad and the Portuguese finds himself in the customary position of being a favourite to open the scoring.
Cristiano leads the way here at 4/1 with most bookies including William Hill and BetBright while PSG’s Edinson Cavani follows at best odds of 9/2 with Boylesports. Neymar faces old foes for the first time since leaving Barcelona and the Brazilian would like nothing more than to get on the scoresheet for PSG against Real. Neymar is available at a best of 27/5 with Unibet and 888Sport to find the net first on Wednesday night.
The market remains tight with Kylian Mbappe, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema all available at 6/1 with Boylesports and then we are into the midfielders. Possible options here include Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos at best odds of 19/1 with Unibet and Luka Modric at an excellent 22/1 with Bet365 while PSG’s Angel Di Maria has 14 goals this season and will tempt many at his best of 10/1 with 888Sport.
That’s a decent return by anyone’s standards and it makes the Argentinian our first confirmed tip but we’ll switch to the anytime goal market where he sits at a top price of 3/1 with BetFred.
Other Side Bets
Having analysed all of the attacking talent on display, it could be that Both Teams to Score is the safest bet of the game. Admittedly it looks a little short at a best of 4/9 with Sun Bets but it seems likely that both teams could really go on the offensive from the first whistle.
In fact, when you have an open and attacking contest with so many prolific players in both camps, it can end up in a feast of goals. Just look at last season when PSG played Barca over two dramatic legs that produced a total of 11 goals between the two sides.
With that in mind, betting over the 2.5 goal line should also be safe at best odds of 51/100 with MarathonBet but because we’ve played so safe with the BTTS stake, we’ll be braver here and back over 4.5 at 27/10 with Unibet.
As for the result, it’s such a tight call between two closely-matched teams and it may be that home advantage is all it takes for Real Madrid to take a lead into the second leg in Paris. For now, however, we’ll stay with the following side bets and look forward to what should be a thrilling encounter.
- Angel Di Maria to score anytime at 3/1 with BetFred
- Both Teams to Score at 4/9 with Sun Bets
- Over 4.5 Goals at 27/10 with Unibet
