OHL Classic Golf: Fowler The Favourite Down Mexico Way
November can be a strange month for golf, certainly as far as the PGA Tour is concerned. The battle for Fed Ex points is over for another year as the tour picks up again in some far-flung corners of the globe.
This week we are in Mexico for the country’s only tour event and while there may be some obvious absentees, we still have a strong field. And that’s one of the bonus points for betting on golf at this time of year; with big names absent, it’s far more open and this week there is some excellent value to be found.
Out in Front
Rickie Fowler is the highest ranked golfer on show this week and he starts as favourite in the outright win betting at best odds of 10/1 with Stan James and MarathonBet. Fowler won the Honda Classic back in February but while he has a significant lead in the markets, he is down in fourth place in terms of Power Rankings this week.
Fowler clearly doesn’t have the required stats to head those rankings while the man at the top is also our defending champion. Pat Perez took the title in Mexico by two shots in 2016 and he can be picked up at a best of 16/1 with 888Sport and Unibet for a repeat.
Perez also comes in on a hot streak of form that includes victory in the CIMB Classic last month so there is value in that figure.
Chasing the Leaders
There’s a gap between the top two and third favourite Patrick Reed who is on offer at a top price of 22/1 with bet365 and 188Bet. Last year’s runner up Gary Woodland can also be picked up at 22/1 with Coral and Betway while Zach Johnson will also tempt many punters at his best odds of 28/1 with bet365 and Ladbrokes.
Johnson has two Major wins under his belt and while it’s been a subdued 2017, the 41 year old is in reasonable form and could be an Each Way option this week. The same can be said for Charley Hoffman who is priced at the same 28/1 with 10Bet and bet365. Hoffman is also a former winner of this event having taken the trophy in 2014.
Over the course of a season, a serious golf punter will spot players who rarely win an event but will regularly feature in the Top Ten, therefore making them a decent option in that specific market. One of those golfers is Kevin Chappell who won his first PGA Tour event earlier this year with success in the Valero Texas Open and has since backed that up with some consistently high finishes.
Chappell is available at best odds of 33/1 with Paddy Power and 188Bet to win the OHL Classic but is one of a number of players who we can seriously consider in the Top Ten markets at a top price of 10/3 with SportingBet.
Other prices of interest in the outsiders section include 2015 Champion Graeme McDowell at 50/1 with BetFred, Johnattan Vegas at 80/1 with Betway and Sun Bets plus Byeong Hun An at 50/1 with 888Sport and Unibet. All of those players have enjoyed productive periods in 2017 and are worthy of consideration for a top ten bet at the very least.
The OHL Classic has been held since 2007 and over 10 years it has given us some interesting pointers to possible results in the future. Graeme McDowell is the only non-US player to have taken the trophy and we have no multiple winners in the history of the event.
Pat Perez could defy that final trend as he followed that win in the CIMB Classic with a top ten finish and he leads the Power Rankings in terms of desired stats for this course in Playa Del Carmen. The El Camaleon Golf Club provides us with a par 71 course with a short length of at just under 7,000 yards so the big hitters will have no real advantage over the four days.
Accuracy is key with punishing results for those that miss the fairway and low scores win this event so form with the putter will also be key.
With those stats in mind, Fowler comes into contention but is maybe too short in the outrights. Zach Johnson as an Each Way bet at that 28/1 price with bet365 looks safer but he will need an improvement in form to deliver a profit.
We’ll take that punt and, out of a host of Top Ten Options, Kevin Chappell at 10/3 with SportingBet and Jhonattan Vegas at 15/2 with SportingBet are this week’s picks.
- Zach Johnson Each Way at 28/1 with bet365
- Kevin Chappell for a Top Ten Finish at 10/3 with SportingBet
- Jhonnatan Vegas for a Top Ten Finish at 15/2 with SportingBet
