Manchester United v Manchester City: Honours Even in Vital Local Derby?
The term Super Sunday can be overused at times by the TV broadcasters but this weekend the Premier league fixtures schedule has really served up a treat. We have two huge derbies starting with the battle for bragging rights on Merseyside and then followed by this clash between the Manchester giants.
As always, these games have more than just local pride at stake and this is a vital encounter in terms of the league title race.
It’s a relatively tight market but Manchester City’s brilliant start to the season makes them favourites for the win and you can pick up Pep Guardiola’s men at best odds of 11/9 with Unibet. Victory for Manchester United then follows at a top price of 5/2 with BetFred while the draw completes this market at a best of 13/5 with Paddy Power and Stan James.
City’s long unbeaten run came to an end with defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night but can we really read much into that loss? The squad had already qualified for the next phase of the Champions League and the manager made a number of changes ahead of the more crucial Manchester Derby.
City will therefore be close to full strength while United are carrying some injury and suspension concerns. Our first reaction indicates that the teams are evenly matched and we could be heading for a draw but before we commit, let’s look at the crucial performers in this fixture.
Individual Goal Scorers
City’s twin strikers can’t be separated by most bookies but Sport Pesa have Sergio Aguero as the narrow favourite to open the scoring at best odds of 41/10. Teammate Gabriel Jesus is only marginally behind at a top price of 43/10 with MarathonBet while Romelu Lukaku is the first Manchester United name on the list at a best of 5/1 with Coral and Paddy Power.
There are so many options in two potent sides although Zlatan Ibrahimovic is unlikely to start so we would avoid his best odds of 11/2 with Boylesports. A better option could be City’s attacking midfielder Raheem Sterling who has a scoring record that most strikers would be proud of this season. Sterling is available at a top price of 7/1 with bet365 and BetBright to score the first goal on Sunday.
Alternatively, you could pick up the England winger in the anytime market where he is on offer at best odds of 45/17 with Unibet and 888Sport. We’ll make our first tip in this market and while Sterling is a tempter at a reasonable price, we’ll opt instead for Lukaku who is in good touch and can lift himself for the really big games. Lukaku is on offer at a top price of 15/8 with Paddy Power to find the net at any time during the 90 minutes.
Other Side Bets
Taking the popular options into account and we have Both Teams to Score which is at a best of 5/7 with 10Bet and Sport Pesa. We could tip this as we’re going for a scoring draw but let’s see first if there any value anywhere else.
If you agree with our assessment then you could opt for a correct score of 1-1 and this is on offer with William Hill and 10Bet at industry best odds of 13/2. However, we’ll finish our round up of tips with the overs and unders line and we’re going pretty low here.
Under 3.5 definitely has potential but it looks short to us at a best of 2/5 with Stan James so we’ll try for better value with under 2.5 which edges past the Even Money mark and comes in at a top price of 26/25 with MarathonBet.
We’re expecting a lot of price boosts and enhanced new customer deals from around the books but in a game which looks as tight as this one, there will always be plenty of value in the standard markets. Our first reaction was to call a draw and having looked further, we still think these teams will cancel each other out so we’re banking on these tips to increase the enjoyment of what should be a dramatic afternoon.
- The Draw at 13/5 with Paddy Power
- Romelu Lukaku to score anytime at 15/8 with Paddy Power
- Under 2.5 Goals at 26/25 with MarathonBet
