Manchester United v West Ham United: Red Devils Look Good for Early Win
Having claimed three trophies in his first season as manager, Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho will know that the fans are looking to him to offer a genuine title challenge this time around. United finished in sixth place as their league campaign petered out and Sunday’s game with West Ham will give us an early indication as to what we can expect from the Red Devils this time.
The Hammers themselves should be more competitive this year and the arrival of former Manchester United player Javier Hernandez gives them a strong striking alternative to the frequently injured Andy Carroll. It’s going to be an exciting and potentially entertaining game at Old Trafford on Sunday but the bookies can only see one winner.
Manchester United go into this game as the clear favourites at best odds of 7/10 with MarathonBet. The draw is at a top price of 49/10 with MarathonBet once again while a win for West Ham is currently available at a best of 11/1 with several bookmakers including Winner Sports and BetBright.
First games in any campaign can throw up some surprises and it is hard to read anything into pre-season but Manchester United are shaping up well ahead of the big kick off. They lost to Real Madrid on Tuesday but there were positive signs and Red Devils fans should be set to see the best of Romelu Lukaku, starting with a likely win in this fixture.
Individual Goal Scorers
Speaking of Lukaku, the Belgian striker is favourite to open the scoring here at 11/4 with Paddy Power and Winner Sports. With 26 goals for Everton last year, the striker looked a certainty for the Golden Boot at one point and if he maintains that form at Old Trafford he will be a natural favourite.
His new strike partner Marcus Rashford is second on the list at 4/1 with Paddy Power and Boylesports while the Armenian Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a decent record when he was used last season and is worth a look at best odds of 5/1 with Bet365 and 10Bet.
For West Ham fans, you have to move right through the market to find a mention for Javier Hernandez at a top price of 11/1 with Bet365 and BetBright and the Mexican may just be a decent tip in the anytime market at a best of 4/1 with BetFred and 32Red.
One player who has done well for us in that anytime market is Manchester United’s Juan Mata and he is an option for Sunday’s game at 21/10 with Paddy Power but we expect West Ham to attack and score so Hernandez is our first tip of the day.
Other Side Bets
Manchester United are a club renowned for entertaining and attack-minded play but we didn’t see much of that in 2016/17. Mourinho’s men had one of the meanest defences in the division but a lack of goals at the other end of the pitch kept them out of the Champions League places.
Jose Mourinho will be aware of that and we could see a more potent Manchester United side, led by the prolific Lukaku. West Ham will need to go on the offensive here too and when we take all of this into account, betting over the 2.5 goal line at 8/11 with 32Red and 888Sport seems a strong bet.
In fact, we are going to be a fraction braver and take over 3.5 goals at a top price of 37/19 with 888Sport. We expect an attacking, open and entertaining 90 minutes and, if you want an outside bet to greet the new season, a correct score of Manchester United 3 West Ham United 1 can be the final tip of the day at best odds of 12/1 with Bet365.
Manchester United to win is our verdict but the price in the open market doesn’t interest us. You could look for some new customer enhanced deals to improve those odds while we focus on the side markets for Sunday’s big game.
- Javier Hernandez to score anytime at 4/1 with BetFred
- Over 3.5 goals at 37/19 with 888Sport
