Manchester United v Paris Saint-Germain: Red Devils Seek Early Advantage
This week’s set of Champions League matches sees two English sides involved with both Spurs and Manchester United looking for a passage to the quarter finals. Both are outsiders in their respective ties but United’s recent upturn in form gives them genuine hope as they host Paris Saint-Germain.
Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer and his men would have preferred the first leg to be away from home so it’s imperative that they take a winning advantage to Paris in the return.
Due Date: 12 February, 2019
In terms of the 90 minute market, this is very close with odds against options available on all three outcomes. Manchester United will start as favourites and can currently be picked up at 13/10 with William Hill and BetFred. Victory for PSG on the night is quoted at best industry odds of 11/5 with Unibet and Betway while the draw rounds things off at 5/2 with SportingBet and Black Type.
In terms of the To Qualify market, things are clearer with PSG in front at 4/7 with William Hill and Betway. United are therefore classed as the outside bet at a top price of 7/5 with SportingBet.
Much has been made of United’s return to form and that incredible run of eight wins under caretaker manager Solskjaer. Over in France, PSG are dominating their league and are streets ahead at the top of Ligue Un. It’s such a tight call and there is value in all outcomes but that momentum, and a hostile Old Trafford crowd should be enough to give United a slender advantage to take back to Paris.
A number of players have rediscovered their scoring touch since Jose Mourinho left and Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have really responded to the new boss. Pogba was on target in Saturday’s win over Fulham and is a good outside bet to open the scoring against PSG at best odds of 8/1 with William Hill and 888Sport.
The favourite in this first goalscorer market is Kylian Mbappe who is available at best odds of 5/1 with Black Type. Remember, there is definitely no Neymar in this PSG side and it’s unlikely that Edinson Cavani will play so Mbappe is the man under the spotlight for the French team.
Three United players then follow at the same top price of 6/1 with William Hill. Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial are the men in question and all three will pose a threat to the PSG defence.
After Pogba, former Manchester United player Angel Di Maria is listed at a best of 10/1 with WIlliam Hill once again. The Argentine international experienced an unhappy spell at Old Trafford but he’s in form in France and would like nothing better than to register against his old employers.
Moving through the market, some outside punts for the first goal might include Juan Mata at 11/1, Jesse Lingard at 12/1 and Adrien Rabiot at 20/1. Once again, all of those prices come from William Hill who seem to be dominating the top prices in the first goal scorer betting.
There are some interesting numbers here but our tip switches to the anytime market where Marcus Rashford sits at reasonable best odds of 2/1 with Unibet and SportPesa. He’s another man to return to form and with Romelu Lukaku struggling, Rashford could be United’s main source of goals.
Other Side Bets
Taking the most popular side bets into account first, we have the Both Teams to Score market at a top price of 11/18 with 10Bet and SportNation. Neither team has drawn a blank in any of their last ten combined matches so that looks a strong option.
Odds of 11/18 look a little too short however so it could be wiser to switch to Over 2.5 goals at 14/19 with SportNation. Even with Neymar and possibly Cavani absent, there is so much attacking flair in both camps that this seems likely to drop in.
For our final tip, it’s a choice between that Over 2.5 goals or a Correct Score of 2-1 in favour of Manchester United. The second of those two options is listed at best odds of 35/4 with SportPesa on a night when the hosts should take advantage of a weakened PSG side to take a slender lead into the second leg.
- Manchester United to win at 13/10 with BetFred
- Marcus Rashford to score any time at 2/1 with Unibet
- Correct Score: Manchester United 2 PSG 1 at 35/4 with SportPesa
