Manchester City v Schalke 04: City looking for routine 90 minutes
With two English sides already in the hat for the last eight of the Champions League, Manchester City are expected to join Spurs and Manchester United on Tuesday night. City claimed a 3-2 win in Germany three weeks ago and are widely tipped to have a comfortable night at the Etihad.
Can Schalke 04 cause any kind of upset or should we look beyond the result market to extract any value from this tie?
Date: 12 March, 2019
Betting on the result in 90 minutes shows Manchester City as clear favourites at 2/13 with Betway and SportPesa. The draw comes next at 8/1 with Black Type while a win for Schalke is right out at best odds of 25/1 with Coral.
In terms of the To Qualify market, the bookies have this as a foregone conclusion with City quoted at a top price of just 1/100 with SportingBet. It’s a figure that leaves the German side available at 28/1 with BetFred.
We witnessed shocks and thrills in last week’s UCL games with Ajax and Manchester United proving to be unlikely qualifiers. However, we don’t expect that to happen here. We know that Manchester City have slipped up at times in this campaign but if we look at the form guide, they have won all of their last five games. Schalke, meanwhile, have drawn one and lost four of their last five so there is a clear gulf in quality.
It’s a City win all the way for us but with prohibitive prices in those match odds, we need to look elsewhere for our first tip.
Individual Goal Scorers
Manchester City players dominate the individual goal scorer markets and it’s Sergio Aguero who starts as favourite to find the net first. The Argentine can be backed at odds of 13/5 with William Hill and Royal Panda while Gabriel Jesus is up next at 3/1 with Ladbrokes and 188Bet.
Raheem Sterling has discovered some scoring touch in front of goal and the England winger looks interesting at 15/4 with Betway before a raft of City midfielders follow. We could claim Riyad Mahrez or Leroy Sane who are both available at a top price of 5/1 with Betway or we could move down to David Silva at a best of 15/2 with Unibet and 888Sport.
Finally we get to a Schalke player in Mark Uth who is available at best odds of 18/1 with Betway. However, his record of two goals in 18 league games for the German side suggests we should be looking elsewhere.
Our tip, and our first confirmed bet of the night is for Raheem Sterling to open the scoring. The winger has a healthy return of 18 goals in 38 games this season and while you could play safer and take Sterling to score in 90 minutes at Even Money with Ladbrokes and Coral, we’re happy to take the longer punt.
Other Side Bets
Manchester City’s win over Watford at the weekend gives them a total of seven goals in their last five matches. That’s not a big return for a side with so much striking talent and over that five-game period, Both Teams to Score would have only dropped in twice.
For Schalke 04, they have scored just five times in the same period and once again, BTTS would have only come in on two occasions. That data suggests we should be avoiding Both Teams to Score which is available at a rare, odds against figure of 21/17 with 188Bet. Instead, we’ll back Manchester City to win to nil which is on offer at 3/4 with William Hill and makes the result betting just a shade more interesting.
If you want a safer final bet with which to finish this review, we would suggest betting over 2.5 goals at 7/20 with 888Sport. Once again, that’s just too short for us so we’ll end with a correct score of Manchester City 3 Schalke 04 0 and that’s quoted at best odds of 13/2 with SportingBet.
- Raheem Sterling to score the first goal at 15/4 with Betway
- Manchester City to win to nil at 3/4 with William Hill
- Correct Score of Manchester City 3 Schalke 04 0 at 13/2 with SportingBet
