Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers: Record Breaking Reds After One More Win in Hope for Miracle
The Premier League comes to a climactic end this weekend, and there is still plenty to play for at the top of the table. Manchester City lead Liverpool by one point in the title race, and if the Sky Blues win their final game at Brighton and Hove Albion, the title will once again return to the Etihad Stadium.
Anything less than three points for Pep Guardiola’s side, will mean that Liverpool will have the chance to win their first title in 29 years, with a victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday afternoon with a kick-off time of 15:00 BST.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are in an incredible run of form, in a tally that included the recent 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona to reach their second successive Champions League Final. It is conceivable that Liverpool could end their Premier League campaign with 97 points and still not have enough to win the title.
Standing in the way of that tally are Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have had a highly successful debut season under Nuno Espirito Santo. Wolves will finish in seventh place irrespective of Sunday’s result and have won their last three league outings, as well as a fine record against the league’s top six this season, so this game is not likely to be the cakewalk most Anfield inhabitants will expect.
Event Date: 12 May, 2019
Liverpool are the strong favourites with the bookmakers to continue their winning run in the Premier League, as the Reds can be backed at the best industry price, at the time of writing of 8/25 with 888Sport and Unibet. Klopp’s side have been almost imperious this season at Anfield with just four points dropped so far this season in the Premier League.
The Draw is next best at 5/1 with Betfred, and it is likely to be Wolves’ real chance of taking anything away from the game, in truth. The optimistic punter may be willing to take the 10/1 with William Hill and Coral on a Wolves victory, but the Midlanders must face a team in an unprecedent run of form – which highlights the tough task ahead.
From a betting angle, this game points firmly towards another win for Liverpool at very short odds. The Reds are likely to have ultimately too much in their locker for Wolves, as they look to climb to the summit of the Premier League on Sunday night.
Individual Goal Scorers
Liverpool has a plethora of attacking options, none more than Mohamed Salah, who has 22 Premier League goals this season, and has one hand on the Golden Boot, as Salah leads Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero by two goals. The Egyptian is a top price of 7/2 to open the scoring, with Betway and SportingBet to continue his fine recent form.
Fellow strike-partner of Salah, Sadio Mane is a 15/4 poke to score the first goal. Roberto Firmino is a doubt for the game, but he can be backed at 5/1 again with Betway if he makes the starting line-up.
From a Wolves perspective, the most likely candidate is Mexican forward, Raul Jiminez, who is a top-price of 10/1 with Unibet and 888Sport to open the scoring. Jiminez has been in fine form this season following a big money summer move from Benfica.
Portuguese international, Diogo Jota could be primed for an assault on the Liverpool back-line at the reasonable odds of 23/2 with Unibet and 888Sport again, and he is a constant danger from wide areas.
Others to consider at bigger odds include Liverpool’s star defender, Virgil van Dijk, who is a major threat at set-pieces. He could be worth chancing at 18/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral. Wolves midfield maestro, Joao Moutinho is also worth a second glance – at a huge 50/1 with Betway.
Other Side Bets
I have already pinned my colours to the Liverpool mast for this game, but I’m not prepared to weigh in at the prohibitive odds of 8/25, so I’ve come up with some other options.
Firstly, the 16/5 on offer with Betfred and Betway for Liverpool to be level at Half Time and to win the match at Full Time is one bet that interests me. The Reds always look to begin games on the front foot – especially at home – but this game could well be a nervy start for the Reds and Wolves may be able to cope with the home side’s attacking barrage before the break, before ultimately succumbing to defeat.
Secondly, I’m obviously keen on Liverpool winning this game, but also, by keeping a clean sheet. The 21/20 on offer with William Hill and Coral is currently the best available. Liverpool, for all their attacking intent and goal scoring prowess this season, have proven to be very strong defensively – mainly because they’re always attacking! But keeping Wolves out in an ultimately comfortable win looks to be a solid option.
Finally, I love to place wagers on Correct Score bets – and this game is no exception. My selection of choice is for a 2-0 victory for Liverpool. This bet is available at the best industry price of 6/1 with SportingBet and 10BET.
