Liverpool v ManCity: Klopp Hoping to Maintain Good Run Against Pep’s City
Statistically, the Premier League’s top two clash at Anfield on Sunday afternoon – kick-off: 16:30 GMT – as Liverpool host Manchester City, in what promises to be a mouth-watering clash. Both teams head the league standings on nineteen points, but Pep Guardiola’s side have the narrow advantage of a more favourable goal difference before the teams take to the pitch.
Liverpool have had the better of the exchanges between the pair in recent times, with four successive victories since the turn of the year, including home and away victories in last season’s Champions League Quarter-finals.
City will be looking to redress the balance however, but Jurgen Klopp’s side seem to have the measure of their opponents. Can they continue in the same vein? Read on for our thoughts.
Liverpool had a fast start to their Premier League campaign, but that was stopped last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea. Daniel Sturridge scored a late wonder goal to claim a deserved point. The Reds have now not won in their last three outings following Champions League defeat in Naples on Wednesday night, but the return to Anfield may just be the boost required.
The Reds are available at 8/5 with Betway to go top of the Premier League on Sunday night, while Manchester City can be backed with Unibet at 16/9 and the Draw is available with several firms, including Coral at 13/5.
Manchester City have continued their Premier League form of last season into the new campaign with just one draw against newly promoted Wolves being their only blip from a perfect record. This fixture will likely be the only one all season in the Premier League where Guardiola’s side will take the pitch as betting underdogs, but that in itself offers value in backing the reigning champions.
It is only eight games into the league campaign, but this game could prove pivotal for the destination of the title this season. Liverpool have had City’s measure of late, but at the prices, I’m prepared to take the plunge on Pep’s side to redress the balance at a fraction over 7/4.
Individual Goal Scorers
Four of the current ten top Premier League goal scorers play for one of the two clubs in this fixture, which is a major indication that goals are highly likely here. Liverpool’s talisman, Mohamed Salah is the market leader to score the opening goal at 9/2 with BetBright. Salah has yet to hit the heights of last season’s scoring heroics for Liverpool, so he is passed over on this occasion.
Sergio Aguero has already scored five league goals for Manchester City this season and is a very tempting 5/1 poke to score first with BetBright once again, while fellow City forwards, Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling can be backed at 63/10 (Jesus) with MarathonBet, and 15/2 (Sterling) with 10Bet and SportPesa.
Sadio Mane has become one of the key players in a Liverpool shirt this season, and the former Southampton man could be the one to be on at 13/2 (generally available). Others worthy of a mention include Roberto Firmino at the standout price of 7/1 with Boylesports and 888Sport, while Leroy Sane is widely available at 10/1 if given the starting nod.
Aguero is the man in top form so far this season, and I’m prepared to row in with the Argentinian striker to once again score the first goal.
Other Side Bets
For the player who likes to punt at short prices, the 5/9 on offer with SportPesa for Both Teams to Score in this game could well be the order here. Liverpool and Manchester City play entertaining, attacking football, and I can only foresee goals at each end of the pitch in what should be a fascinating contest.
I’m prepared to find better value elsewhere however, and William Hill offer 7/2 on Manchester City to win the match and both teams to score. Goals are an obvious starting point in this game and if Guardiola’s side are to win this game, it is unlikely that they will keep a clean sheet in doing so. For information purposes, Liverpool are16/5 with 888Sport for the same market.
As is usual in our betting previews, we like to offer up a Correct Score bet, and this game is no exception. Our prediction for this game is a 2-1 away victory for Manchester City. This outcome is a tempting price of 10/1 with Betfred and SportingBet, and is worthy of a wager.
- Manchester City to Win the Match at 16/9 with Unibet
- Manchester City to Win the Match and Both Teams to Score at 7/2 with William Hill
- Liverpool 1-2 Manchester City Correct Score bet at 10/1 with SportingBet.
