Liverpool v Chelsea: Two Teams Desperate for Three Points in Must Win Clash
The race for the Premier League title and the Top Four spots were already at boiling point, but this weekend’s fixtures are likely to overflow the proverbial melting pot, as title chasers Liverpool host Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday afternoon – kick: off 16:30 BST. Both sides are in desperate need of the three points for contrasting reasons.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are embroiled in a title battle with Manchester City and currently lead the blue half of Manchester by two points, but they have played one game more. City will look to return to the top of the table with a victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park immediately before the important battle on Merseyside. A victory for Pep Guardiola’s team would only crank up the pressure yet further on Liverpool, who face an in-form Chelsea side.
Chelsea, by contrast sit in third place in the Premier League table in the battle for the Champions League placings, but they have played one extra game in comparison to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United. A defeat at Anfield would put those Top Four hopes in a precarious position, with all three teams below the Blues having winnable games over this round of fixtures.
So, who will come out on top? Please continue to read our preview for the game and some thoughts on prospective betting opportunities.
Date: April 14, 2019
Something has to give in this game. Liverpool have won their last six outings in all competitions, while Chelsea have prevailed in four consecutive games. The bookmakers believe that Liverpool on home soil will be a tough nut to crack as the Merseysiders can be backed at the best industry price at the time of writing of 13/20 with Unibet.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 17 games at Anfield, but the last team to claim a victory here was Chelsea, who won 2-1 in the EFL Cup back in September 2018. Maurizio Sarri’s team are a best-priced 9/2 with Betfred and SportingBet to seriously derail Liverpool’s hopes of a first league title since 1990.
The Draw is really the result that neither team wants in truth, but it could be worth considering at 16/5 with Coral and Unibet, as neither team dare lose, but must risk everything to win.
Individual Goal Scorers
Liverpool striker, Mohamed Salah has found his scoring boots in recent weeks following a small barren spell considering his extremely high standards. The Egyptian hitman is a top-priced 4/1 with Betway to score first. Fellow strike partners to Salah, include Sadio Mane at 11/2 with 10Bet and SportPesa, while Roberto Firmino is also available at 11/2 with the same bookmakers.
Chelsea are likely to lean heavily on their Belgian talisman, Eden Hazard, who scored a fine double salvo to sweep aside West Ham earlier in the week. If you fancy the Real Madrid target, then 8/1 is the best odds you can have with 888Sport and Unibet.
Others to consider at larger odds include James Milner, who is a 16/1 chance with RedZoneSports and BetHard Milner is as short as 21/2 with Unibet, which highlights some value. Fellow Englishman, Ruben Loftus-Cheek has returned to the Chelsea starting line-up in recent weeks, and there is some differential in his price to open the scoring in this game. SportingBet are as short as 8/1 on the Chelsea man, while Unibet and 888Sport go the top price of 20/1, which is much more worthwhile.
The player who once again takes my eye though at bigger odds once again is Virgil van Dijk. The 25/1 on offer with BetFred is too big to pass up on, as the big Dutchman is almost un-defendable in the air at set-pieces. SportingBet also offer 9/1 on van Dijk to score any time as a lively alternative to the initial advice.
Other Side Bets
Since 2011, eight of the last nine meetings between these two teams at Anfield has seen both teams find the back of the net, so the 4/5 on offer with SportPesa and Betfred amongst others highlights some serious value, and is my strongest bet of the game.
The pressure is really on in this game for both teams, but with the roar of the Anfield audience, I expect Liverpool to narrowly prevail in a highly competitive clash. With that in mind, the 12/5 on offer with Betfred for Liverpool to Win the Match and Both Teams to Score is definitely worth an interest.
As usual with our betting previews, we like to finish off with a Correct Score selection, and our advice is for a 2-1 win for Liverpool to enhance their claims for a maiden Premier League title. This eventuality can be taken with BetFred once again at the best industry odds of 15/2.
- Both Teams to Score in the Match at 4/5 with SportPesa
- Liverpool to Win the Match and Both Teams to Score at 12/5 with Betfred
- Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea Correct Score bet at 8/1 with BetFred
