Holders Edge Through First Round
Reigning Davis Cup champions Czech Republic came through their World Group First Round game against the Netherlands following a 3-2 scoreline.
Tomas Berdych ensured the win when he beat Thiemo De Bakker in the fourth rubber on Sunday afternoon on the hard indoor surface at the Cez Arena in Ostrava.
It took the Czech number one just an hour and 46 minutes to complete the 3-0 win against the world number 139 to reward Betfair backers of the nation. As usual odds were not that favorable online at the best tennis betting sites but one could still bag a healthy profit for the Czech win.
The Netherlands made a good start to the fixture of Friday as Robin Haase came through a five set encounter against Radek Stepanek with a win 3-6 6-4 6-7(4-7) 6-2 6-1 to put the visitors in front.
Berdych then dropped just six points in a 3-0 scoreline over against Igor Sijsling to level the scores after day one.
The former Wimbledon finalist returned for the doubles game on Saturday where he paired up with Stepanek. They needed four sets to beat Haase and doubles specialist Jean-Julien Rojer.
Berdych then recorded his third point of the game with his 6-1 6-4 6-3 win over De Bakker.
The victory, which puts the holders into the quarter-final, is their 10th straight success in this competition.
Czech Republic will now face Japan away from home in the last eight where they will be favourites again with Betfair. They are bidding for their third successive trophy in the Davis Cup.
In the 2012 final in Prague, Czech Republic defeated Spain 3-2 for their first trophy since 1980. Then 12 months later, they beat Serbia in Belgrade in another final rubber decider 3-2. Stepanek won the final game against Dusan Lajovic 6-3 6-1 6-1.
France currently head the outright market for the 2014 competition. They overcame Australia 5-0 in their first round tie.
