France v Uruguay: French Fancied to Progress
Uruguay dominated Group A on the way to the knockout stage of Russia 2018 and the narrow 2-1 scoreline over Portugal in the Round of 16 didn’t really do justice to their impressive display. In contrast, France were rather subdued in their section although they did proceed as group winners before thumping an under par Argentinian side in the next phase.
The first of our World Cup quarter finals gets underway in Nizhny Novgorod this Friday but how do the bookies see things?
Based on results from previous rounds it may seem that these sides are evenly matched but France are clear at the top of the result betting at best odds of 107/100 with Royal Panda to win in normal time. The draw follows at a top price of 57/25 with MarathonBet while victory for Uruguay follows at a best of 70/19 with Unibet.
Those are the 90 minute prices but if we switch to the To Qualify betting, France shorten quite considerably to best odds of 1/2 with Betway while Uruguay are available at a top price of 9/5 with 888Sport.
Clearly the bookmakers are getting behind France here but is that a sound call? We’ll start our assessment by looking at the key figures in this match.
Individual Goal Scorers
Kylian Mbappe was the real star for France as his side came from behind to defeat Argentina and the PSG striker is being heavily backed to continue his fine run of form. Following his double strike in that Round of 16 game, Mbappe is favourite to score first in this quarter final at best odds of 11/2 with 10Bet.
Mbappe’s teammate Antoine Griezmann was also on target from the penalty spot and he is close behind as second favourite at a top price of 23/4 with MarathonBet.
Uruguay have some potent strikers too and their first mention in this market comes via Luis Suarez who is at a best of 13/2 to open the scoring with Unibet and 888Sport. Following Suarez is his teammate Edinson Cavani, who scored both goals against Portugal last time out and can be claimed at 13/2 with Unibet and 888Sport.
Options from further down the pitch may include France’s Paul Pogba at 10/1 with Betway and SportingBet while an outside punt could feature Ngolo Kante – a rare goal scorer but a possible tempter at a generous best of 35/1 with 188Bet.
With so many options we’ll play safer here and look at the anytime market where the prices for the Uruguay players in particular look quite reasonable. Edinson Cavani came off with a knock in that game against Portugal and while he appears fit to start on Friday, the attention could switch to Luis Suarez who is our tip at a top price of 40/17 with Unibet to find the net at any point in 90 minutes.
Other Side Bets
The key strikers on either side are finding form at just the right time so Both Teams to Score may be an obvious pick at best odds of 7/5 with SportingBet. We’re actually surprised that this isn’t priced at an odds on figure so this immediately looks to be a very strong tip.
Other popular side bets include Over 2.5 goals which looks an equally strong proposition and can be backed at best odds of 7/4 with SportingBet and 888Sport. In fact, you could go a little higher here and take Over 3.5 at a top price of 24/5 with Unibet and 888Sport.
For those bets to land, much could depend on the fitness of Edinson Cavani but Over 2.5 should be safe in our opinion. Based on that 4-3 win over Argentina, France are worthy favourites for this match but they showed that they can be vulnerable at the back and that’s an area for Uruguay’s explosive strikers to exploit.
It’s a tough call but France look to be building and improving with every game and with Mbappe and Griezmann finding their best form, we’re going with the favourites. All of these tips are for 90 minutes only and we could add a Correct Score of 3-1 to France which is available at an excellent 20/1 with 10Bet.
