France v Argentina: Slow Starters Look to Progress

Attention! Actual odds referenced are correct at time of publishing at 9:26 am June 29, 2018 and are subject to change.

Nobody would suggest that either France or Argentina have been among the best teams at this World Cup but they’re still in it and in with a chance of glory in next month’s final. Here we have two experienced sides who have enjoyed major tournament success in the past so they will be confident of going much deeper.

By the end of Saturday night however, one nation will be on the plane back home so who will prevail in Kazan?

Match Odds

The bookmakers have listed odds against prices on all three 90 minute outcomes here and it’s France who start as favourites for the win at a best of 7/5 with 10Bet. The draw follows at a top price of 54/25 with MarathonBet while the same bookie has the best odds on an Argentinian victory at 13/5.

Those are the odds for the result in normal time and will not take into account any extra time / penalties. If you prefer the To Qualify market, France lead the way here at best odds of 9/13 with 188Bet followed by Argentina at a top price of 13/10 with Unibet and 888Sport.

So the odds setters feel that the French will come through but they may need added time to do so. We’re not so sure but before we commit to a result, let’s look at the players most likely to determine the game.

Individual Goal Scorers

Lionel Messi, Argentina

Lionel Messi has been some way short of his best at Russia 2018 but after scoring against Nigeria in that crucial group game, Argentina’s key striker is favourite to find the net first on Saturday at best odds of 9/2 with Unibet. Chances are coming the way of the Barca striker so while he just has that single goal to date, Messi is a worthy favourite here.

For the French, the bookmakers can’t split Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann with both men available at the same price of 11/2 with SportingBet. Griezmann has just the one goal, from the penalty spot while Giroud has yet to score in this tournament so far.

Behind the obvious candidates there is some potential for value with Kylian MBappe at 6/1 with Boylesports and Sergio Aguero back at 13/2 with MarathonBet and SportingBet

Options from midfield and beyond include Paul Pogba at 12/1 with Boylesports while for Argentina, Angel Di Maria can always offer a threat behind the main strikers and with 19 goals in 96 internationals he may just tempt some punters at best odds of 14/1 with ComeOn.

While Lionel Messi is the obvious choice, that 13/2 price on Sergio Aguero is a generous one in our opinion. The Manchester City striker scored the first goal of Argentina’s Russia 2018 campaign and is just as much of a threat when on form.

Some will want to play safer and back an Aguero anytime goal in 90 minutes at best odds of 13/4 with Unibet but assuming he starts, we’re happy to get on that 13/2 figure for opening goal.

Other Side Bets

We’ll start with some popular options and Both Teams to Score in 90 minutes is available at a top price of 6/5 with Sun Bets and 10Bet. It’s always tempting to get on this option when it sneaks above Even Money but after subdued starts in the groups, is this a good time?

There is a lot of interest in Under 2.5 Goals which is quoted at 1/2 with Ladbrokes and Coral amongst others. All of these prices and most of the current opinions are based on the undeniable fact that these teams were so goal-shy at the start of the tournament but we don’t think that will continue.

On either side we we have some of the best strikers in world football and while they are underperforming, you can’t keep backing against them to find form indefinitely. Over 2.5 Goals looks the better bet here at a generous best price of 17/10 with MarathonBet so we’ll make that our next confirmed tip.

As for the result, we’re edging slightly towards Argentina as they have the quality to win against any opposition and while we can’t necessarily look far back into history, they have come through against the odds time and time again. It may not be a popular bet, but Argentina to win it is nicely priced at 13/5 and remember, all of our tips are for 90 minutes only, excluding any extra time.

Best Bets:

  • Argentina to win at 13/5 with MarathonBet
  • Sergio Aguero to score first at 13/2 with SportingBet
  • Over 2.5 Goals at 17/10 with MarathonBet
