Everton v Arsenal: Pressure on Both Managers in Goodison Clash

Following last weekend’s Premier League efforts from both teams, this game is hugely important for under-fire bosses, Ronald Koeman and Arsene Wenger as Everton host Arsenal at Goodison Park on Sunday – 1:30pm kick off.

The blue half of Merseyside were expected to get their stumbling Premier League campaign back on track last Sunday at Brighton, but it took a late Wayne Rooney penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw on the South Coast.

From an Arsenal perspective, their second half capitulation at Vicarage Road that gave Watford a 2-1 victory last Saturday evening was another episode of the Gunners’ inability to cope with footballing physicality, as the pressure mounts on long-serving manager Wenger.

Both teams have the chance for redemption in this clash. Everton will be looking for their third home league win of the season, while the Gunners have yet to taste victory on the road so far in their previous four games.

Match Odds

Considering that both teams are not in the best form of late, this fixture could be deemed difficult to base a strong opinion upon. The bookmakers have to form a market for the punter to gamble upon however, and Arsenal are the favourites to win the contest at the currently best available industry price of 53/50 with Marathon Bet. The draw is the slight second favourite at 27/10 with SportingBet, while a home win for the Toffees can be had with William Hill at the top odds of 3/1.

The recent Premier League meetings between the two sides doesn’t offer any substantial clues to the outcome of this game with both teams enjoying success in the past. Of the last six league meetings at Goodison Park, the score is Everton two wins, Arsenal two wins and two draws!

Another way to look at this fixture, is to compare the styles of each team. As previously stated, Arsenal tend to struggle with physicality from their opposition. The Gunners have lost several matches in recent times with other teams offering a higher work ethic and being over-powered. My view is that Everton do not have those capabilities over the Gunners, which makes Arsenal my selection at a shade of odds-against.

Individual Goal Scorers

The head of this market is littered with Gunners stars, with recent summer signing Alexandre Lacazette installed as the 4/1 favourite with Paddy Power and Boylesports to strike first in the game. Olivier Giroud – linked with a move to Everton over the summer – is priced up at 43/10 with MarathonBet, while Alexis Sanchez is not far behind at the best odds of 9/2 with Paddy Power and 888sport.

Everton’s first mention comes from Wayne Rooney, who is a top-priced 7/1 with Bet365 to open the scoring, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Oumar Niasse and Sandro Ramirez all 8/1 chances with Bet365, and SportPesa.

The best advice I can suggest for this market is to hold all First Goalscorer, or Anytime Goalscorer bets until the teams are announced an hour before kick-off. Okay, if the player you have backed isn’t on the pitch at the time of the first goal then your stakes will be refunded, but with both teams facing Europa League action before Sunday, the line-ups could be difficult to predict.

Other Side Bets

Goals in this game could be at a premium as both managers will view this fixture as an avoid defeat at all costs and on that basis, one bet that catches the eye is UNDER 2.5 goals at the best price of 15/14 with 188BET. Everton have managed just three league goals so far in front of their home support, while the Per Mertesacker header in the Watford defeat last weekend was the first Arsenal away goal in the Premier League this season, which offers even greater appeal for this bet.

Our final offering comes in the Correct Score market with a 1-0 Arsenal win a tentative selection at the best price of 8/1 with Bet365. My view is that this game will not be a classic encounter, but with a small preference for an away win to give Arsene Wenger some respite and Ronald Koeman more headaches.

Best Bets:

  • Under 2.5 Goals at 15/14 with 188BET
  • Arsenal to win the match at 53/50 with Marathonbet
  • Arsenal 1-0 Correct Score at 8/1 with Bet365.
