Crystal Palace v Southampton: Hodgson’s Eagles Look to Get off to a Flier
It’s been a strange week in the life of a Crystal Palace supporter. Last weekend, a fourth straight defeat in the league left the Eagles at the bottom of the table and led to the sacking of manager Frank De Boer after just 77 days in charge at Selhurst Park.
The club moved quickly to install former England manager Roy Hodgson into the vacant hot seat but there isn’t much time for the veteran boss. Palace need to start winning and three points in Saturday’s live lunchtime kick off are therefore going to be vital.
Neither team has shone at this admittedly early stage of the new campaign so we are left with a very tight betting market coming into this fixture. Southampton are the slight favourites here and the visitors can be picked up at odds of 79/50 while victory for Palace is out at best odds of 41/20 with MarathonBet again while the draw completes this market at 11/5 with bet365.
There is a theory that sides do pick up under a new manager and we can look back to last season and Leicester City, who recovered after Craig Shakespeare was appointed, managing to pull themselves away from the relegation zone.
No-one would therefore be surprised if struggling Crystal Palace were to take the points here but we’ll base our prediction on form and the quality in these two squads. Before we come to that, who are the key players who can swing this game either way?
Individual Goal Scorers
Palace finished last season on such a positive note with wins against Arsenal and eventual Champions Chelsea. It’s therefore surprising to see them struggle so much, particularly when you consider that there is some serious quality in this squad.
Christian Benteke is perhaps the best example of this and the big Belgian striker is favourite to open the scoring in this match at a top price of 5/1 with bet365 and Sun Bets. Team mate Andros Townsend is the man for the spectacular long range efforts and he could be a tempter in this first goal market at best odds of 10/1 with bet365 and BetFred.
Elsewhere, Southampton players are dominating this bet with Charlie Austin a joint favourite at 5/1 with bet365 and Boylesports. Manolo Gabbiadini is marginally further back at a best of 6/1 with bet365 and Sun Bets while others will look to Shane Long at a top price of 15/2 with bet365 again.
When a new manager arrives, players within the squad can lift their games to an extent as they look to impress the man in charge. Keeping that in mind, it could be time for Christian Benteke to have a say in the outcome and if you don’t fancy those 5/1 first goalscorer odds, you could switch to the anytime markets where the Belgian is at 24/13 with 32Red for a goal in 90 minutes.
Other Side Bets
We don’t think it’s going to be a particularly attractive game with lots of flowing football so betting under the 2.5 goal line interests us at best odds of 7/10 with MarathonBet. We’ve offered the theory that Palace will raise their game for their new manager but neither side has impressed this season and their first job is not to lose.
Both Teams to Score at a top price of 28/29 with 188Bet is a common side bet which most of us consider but bear in mind that Palace have yet to even register a goal in those four Premier League matches to date. Southampton themselves have scored just three times in that same period so overall, it looks like a tight win in favour of the home side and you could potentially round off the following series of tips with a correct score of Crystal Palace 1 Southampton 0 which looks decent value at best odds of 8/1 with Winner Sports and bet365.
- Crystal Palace to win at 41/20 with MarathonBet
- Christian Benteke to score any time at 24/13 with 32Red
- Under 2.5 goals at 7/10 with MarathonBet
