Chelsea v West Ham United: Back the Blues in Must-Win Clash
It will be an emotional day at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea say goodbye to their former skipper – England international Ray Wilkins. A midfielder who was respected at all his clubs, Wilkins’ untimely passing casts something of a shadow over a game that has become a must-win for the Blues.
Having lost at home to Spurs last week, Chelsea are losing ground in the race for Champions League places so they have to take the three points against West Ham and turn in a performance that would make their former captain proud.
The Hammers won impressively last week against fellow relegation strugglers Southampton but there was no doubt that Chelsea would start as favourites here and they can be backed at best odds of 2/7 with Betway and Sky Bet. Victory for West Ham United is out at a top price of 12/1 with Coral while, in the middle of those two figures, we have the draw at a best of 53/10 with MarathonBet.
It’s certainly interesting to note that while Chelsea have home advantage, a better squad and are 23 points clear of their opponents in the Premier League table, form over the last six games is identical on both sides.
In that period, both Chelsea and West Ham have won two and lost four so perhaps that’s an indicator that there might just be some value in that one-sided result market.
Individual Goal Scorers
Before we confirm a verdict ourselves, let’s take a look at the popular goal scoring markets where we find joint favourites to find the net first. The Chelsea pair of Olivier Giroud, at 7/2 with bet365 and Sport Pesa plus Eden Hazard at 7/2 with Boylesports and Black Type are the men involved but how do we suggest you pick between the two?
Giroud is the direct striker but there is the possibility that the former Arsenal man may start on the bench so Hazard may be the preferred option although 7/2 looks a little short for an attacking midfielder.
There are plenty of other options so, moving down the list, we have Alvaro Morata at best odds of 19/5 with Sport Pesa, plus Pedro and Willian at the same top price of 5/1 with bet365 and Black Type. As you will have noticed, this market is dominated by Chelsea players and we have to move down to best odds of 12/1 with bet365, before West Ham are represented by Marko Arnautovic.
The Austrian has found his shooting boots in recent weeks but we’re staying with Chelsea for this one and it’s back to Willian. The Brazilian has a healthy tally of 13 goals this season and against a suspect West Ham defence there should be plenty of opportunities to add to that. If you don’t fancy that 5/1 first goal price, Willian at best odds of 7/5 with SportingBet for an anytime goal is the way to go.
Other Side Bets
We’ll start once again with the more popular side betting options where we have Both Teams to Score available at a top price of 11/10 with BetFred. For once, this option isn’t down as the favourite and that underlines the Hammers’ issues in front of goal. While we’re fully behind the home victory, Chelsea to win to Nil gives us a little more value at a best of 11/10 with Boylesports.
Over 2.5 goals should be fairly safe even if West Ham fail to register and this option can be backed at best odds of 3/5 with MarathonBet and 188Bet but while we’ve picked two odds against tips so far, they are both fairly short so we’ll finish in the Correct Score market.
Take the Over 2.5 if you prefer but we like the look of a final score of 3-0 to Chelsea and this is currently listed at a top price of 15/2 with 10Bet.
Chelsea have that poor record of four defeats in their last six but form has to be put in perspective at times. Those losses came to Spurs, Barcelona and the two Manchester clubs and that’s a tough run of fixtures for any side. The Blues should come through on Sunday but it’s a case of finding a little more value away from the result betting.
