Chelsea v Watford: Value on Champions League Chasing Hornets?
While it may be fanciful to expect Watford to hold on to fourth place and be in the Champions League places at the end of the season they are certainly the surprise team of the campaign so far. After a poor finish to 2016/17, the club said goodbye to yet another manager and were widely tipped to go down at the end of this campaign.
Eight games in to the new season and the Hornets are in fourth place after beating Arsenal last time out. That’s one place and two points better than Saturday’s opponents so do Chelsea deserve to be so short when the two teams meet at Stamford Bridge on Saturday?
With two days left until kick off Chelsea are out in front at an odds on figure across the board. Antonio Conte’s men are on offer at a top price of 2/5 with Stan James while the best odds on a Watford victory come in at 10/1 with William Hill.
The draw completes the outright result betting at a best of 9/2 with SportingBet and BetFred but have the bookies got this one right?
The form table is definitely in Watford’s favour with three wins in their last six, alongside two draws and a solitary defeat. Over the same period, Chelsea have won three but they haven’t tasted victory in any of their last three matches – drawing one and losing two.
On paper at least, Chelsea are the strongest side here so, while we leave the result for now, let’s consider the individuals who have the capability to swing this either way.
Individual Goal Scorers
The popular first goal scorer market shows Alvaro Morata as favourite at best odds of 27/10 with SportingBet. The Spaniard has just returned from injury but is that too short in a market where Chelsea have some strong options from midfield?
One of our favourites – Eden Hazard – was on target against Roma in midweek and the Belgian is best-priced at 19/4 with 888Sport to find the net first on Saturday. Other options from a Chelsea perspective include Willian at a best of 13/2 with Paddy Power and BetFred and Marcos Alonso at a tempting 12/1 with Sun Bets.
As for Watford, Troy Deeney was inspirational in that win over Arsenal and he can also be picked up at that same top price of 12/1 with Sun Bets and BetFred while Tom Cleverley, who scored the winner in that game, is way out at 28/1 with Bet365.
We favour Hazard for an anytime goal as a rule and it’s a bet that we should have taken in midweek so hopefully it will turn up trumps again at best odds of 6/4 with 888Sport.
Other Side Bets
If you prefer to stick with the popular options then Both Teams to Score is quoted for this game at a top price of 21/20 with SportingBet. Both teams have scored 13 goals in their eight opening matches and they’re not exactly secure at the back either – Chelsea have conceded 8 while Watford have let in 13 goals at the wrong end of the pitch.
However, at some point you feel that the strongest team has to prevail. Admittedly we did say that about Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea two seasons ago and they never really recovered after a poor opening to the campaign but Conte’s version looks far more solid.
Based on quality rather than current form, we are therefore tipping Chelsea to win it. There will be one or two enhanced odds deals around for new customers to certain sportsbooks but to get a little more value for regular punters we are betting on Chelsea to win to nil which comes in at a best of 13/10 with William Hill.
Hopefully this will be the game where Chelsea really assert their class and start to dominate the opposition as we’re going to conclude this round up with the rather bold tip in the correct score market of Chelsea 3 Watford 0 which is available at a top price of 9/1 with Winner Sports.
- Chelsea to win to nil at 13/10 with William Hill
- Eden Hazard to score anytime at 6/4 with 888Sport
- Correct Score of Chelsea 3 Watford 0 at 9/1 with Winner Sports
