Chelsea v Roma: Blues Looking for Champions League Comfort

It’s not been the best of weeks for Chelsea: With star striker Alvaro Morata injured, the club went down to bottom side Crystal Palace at the weekend and all the while, rumours regarding Antonio Conte’s future at the club continue to gather momentum.

A return to Champions League football may well offer a welcome distraction but Chelsea will need three points when they host Roma at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. It’s been a positive start to the campaign for the Blues but a win would appease fans who could barely believe Saturday’s result.

Match Odds

Despite their struggles at domestic level, Chelsea will start this game as clear favourites at best odds of 4/6 with Stan James and Betway. A victory for Roma is on offer at a top price of 5/1 with bet365 while the draw completes things at 3/1 with Winner Sports and 188Bet.

The form table has the Italian side slightly ahead with five wins and a solitary defeat in their last six. In contrast, Chelsea have won three, drawn one and lost two in the same period with two straight defeats coming into Wednesday’s match.

Based on the comparative quality of the two sides, Chelsea should really take the points here but who are the players who can decide the outcome in their favour?

Individual Goal Scorers

Alvaro Morata

The hosts will be hoping that Morata is fit for this one and the Spaniard is listed as favourite to open the scoring at 3/1 with William Hill and BetFred. In his possible absence, Chelsea may rely on Michy Batshuayi who comes next at a best of 41/10 with 888Sport while Eden Hazard follows at a top price of 27/5 with 888Sport once again.

For Roma, the most familiar name for English fans will be that of Stephan El Shaarawy who was once widely linked with a move to the Premier League. Injuries halted those rumours but he remains their most potent threat and can be backed at a best of 10/1 with bet365 to open the scoring on Wednesday.

A popular bet for us is to take Eden Hazard in the anytime goal market and for the tie against Roma, the Belgian is on offer at best odds of 2/1 with 888Sport for a goal in 90 minutes. That could be a decent option but it’s been a quiet start to the campaign for the Belgian so we’ll maybe look for more value here and you can back Willian in the same market at a top price of 11/4 with BetFred.

Other Side Bets

Looking at the most common side bets shows that you can back Both Teams to score at best odds of 17/20 with SportingBet. Chelsea have scored thirteen times in eight games this season while over in Serie A, Roma have a better average with 14 goals in seven matches.

It does suggest that this bet has potential so by all means add it to your slip if you want a modest return.

In the overs and unders markets, those stats suggest we may not see a feast of goals on Wednesday night so we wouldn’t be looking to bet beyond the 2.5 line. The best odds for over 2.5 goals come in at 5/6 with 188Bet and as that gives marginally better value than BTTS, we’ll add it to our list of tips for this match.

We do feel that Chelsea are the stronger team and that they will take this game but straight win odds of 4/6 aren’t too exciting, particularly when you consider that they come into this on the back of a two-game losing streak. You could look for enhanced odds deals for new customers from across the sportsbooks or alternatively, one price that stands out for us is the 19/5 quoted by MarathonBet on a half time / full time bet on the Draw / Chelsea.

It’s a good alternative to the straight win and it’s hopefully one way to add value to what should be an entertaining 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge.
