Chelsea v Manchester United: Giants clash in Sixth Round Tie

Antonio Conte, Chelsea coach

There’s no doubting that Monday night’s FA Cup clash between Chelsea and Manchester United is the tie of the sixth round. Antonio Conte’s men are seemingly destined to pick up the Premier League title in May but United are on a long unbeaten run and clearly this won’t be a straightforward fixture.

The match is being televised live in the UK on Monday by the BBC – kick off 7.45pm – and here’s how the bookies see it.

Match Odds

It’s a relatively close market but home advantage helps Chelsea to become favourites at a marginal odds on price of 20/23 with Boylesports. If you’re backing the draw, that is available at best odds of 27/10 with Coral while victory for United is quoted at a top price of 15/4 with Winner Sports.

Remember, those are prices for the game in 90 minutes and do not take into account any potential draw or penalties.

With little to choose between the two sides in terms of form or strength of squad, many will point to the fact that Manchester United made the long trip to Russia this week while Chelsea have enjoyed a complete break from football in the interim. However, this tie has been pushed back to Monday night, allowing a further rest for Mourinho’s men so will this really be a factor?

Individual Goal Scorers

We’ll come back to the result but for now, we’ll look at the first goal scorer betting where there are lots of options. Chelsea’s Diego Costa leads with the bookies and the Spanish international is on offer at best odds of 77/20 with MarathonBet to open the scoring.

We took a profit on Eden Hazard in the anytime market against West Ham in the week and the Belgian is up at a best of 13/2 with William Hill and Ladbrokes to score first or, at a top price of2/1 with Coral and SkyBet to find the net at any point in 90 minutes.

As for United players, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is missing so Marcus Rashford starts things off for the men in red at best odds of 9/1 with Bet365 for the first goal. With Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial also in contention, there are many options for Mourinho’s men but if you were looking for a United goal, Henrikh Mkhitaryan seems to save his best form for the big occasions and is a decent punt at 12/1 with Bet365 and 10Bet to open the scoring or 51/10 with 888Sport to find the net in 90 minutes

Other Side Bets

When the teams met at Stamford Bridge in the league back in October, Chelsea won 4-0 in a remarkable game that showed us how they had transformed under Conte into a team that will probably win the league by the end of April.

The same outcome is unlikely however, as United have improved greatly since then, keeping the pressure on the teams above them in the race for Champions League places. Mourinho’s side have drawn their last two games with Bournemouth and Rostov by the same 1-1 scoreline but before that they enjoyed a long run of straight wins.

Ultimately, we think it will be close so Chelsea to win and under 2.5 goals looks good at 13/5 with Stan James. Alternatively, if you want a longer punt in the correct score market, 1-0 to Chelsea at 5/1 with Bet365 or 2-0 to Chelsea at 15/2 with William Hill and Paddy Power are outside tips.

But back to the result: we think you can dismiss the suggestion that United will be feeling the effects of a long trip to Russia so it’s really down to who performs on the night. Both teams are taking the FA Cup seriously at this stage so the key is Chelsea’s home advantage linked to slightly better form plus, of course, the absence of Zlatan.

It’s Chelsea for us in what should be a tight but entertaining contest on Monday night.
