2019 Champions League Final: Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool Odds and Betting Preview
Top level European club football for the 2018/19 season comes to a conclusion on Saturday evening at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid – kick-off: 20:00 BST as Tottenham Hotspur look for their maiden Champions League win against England’s most successful European club side, Liverpool, who can improve on their five previous victories.
Tottenham are making their first appearance in a Champions League final, but their performances in the competition this season make them worthy of their place. However, they face the difficult task in overcoming a Liverpool side full of energy, confidence and attacking intent, along with experience in major finals.
This game has all the ingredients of a potential classic; neither team knows how to take a backward step and goals may be on the agenda as we saw in Wednesday night’s Europa League Final between Arsenal and Chelsea.
Hopefully, we can look forward to a feast of attacking football with two of the most sought-after strikers in world football in Harry Kane – hoping to be fit from an ankle injury- and Mohamed Salah looking to carry their respective teams to Champions League glory.
Date: June 1, 2019
Path to The Final
Mauricio Pochettino’s side qualified in second place from Group B of the Champions League Group stages, behind Barcelona. Tottenham finished on eight points, in a tie with Inter Milan. Spurs had the advantage over the Italian side due to their away goal at the San Siro, while Inter failed to find the net against Tottenham at Wembley.
As the Champions League season has progressed, Tottenham’s form in the competition has improved significantly. A 4-0 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund was an impressive performance, which set-up a Quarter-Final clash with Manchester City.
A 1-0 win for Tottenham at their new home was followed by what can only be described as the most incredible return leg at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City led 4-3 going into injury time and City striker, Raheem Sterling scored what the whole stadium believed to be the winning goal, only for VAR to deny the goal for offside. Unbridled joy turned to disbelief for the City supporters as Tottenham hung on for a miraculous victory over the bookmakers’ favourites to lift the trophy.
The drama continued for Tottenham in the Semi-Finals against Ajax, as the youthful Dutch side took a 1-0 away win back to Amsterdam for the return fixture. Further Ajax goals from Matthijs De Ligt and Hakim Ziyech gave them a 3-0 lead at half-time of the second leg. An incredible turnaround ensued in the second half, as Brazilian attacker, Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick to take Tottenham into their first Champions League final.
Liverpool also qualified in second place from Group C and also denied Italian side Roma on goals scored after both teams finished on nine points, to enter the knockout stages. A stiff Last-16 clash against Bayern Munich was handed to the Merseyside outfit, but a 3-1 away win highlighted their class.
Jurgen Klopp’s side dismantled Porto 6-1 on aggregate at the Quarter-Final stage to set-up the glamourous Semi-Final clash with Barcelona. A disastrous 3-0 away defeat for Liverpool looked to have ended all hopes for a return to the final, twelve months on.
Incredibly, Liverpool beat Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield to set-up an all English final with Tottenham, which is the first since Manchester United and Chelsea met back in 2008.
Considering there was a yawning 26-point gap between the two teams at the end of the Premier League season, it will come as no surprise to see Liverpool as favourites to win the Champions League within ninety minutes.
Betfred go 20/21 on Liverpool winning the game in normal time, while The Draw can be taken at 13/5 with Unibet and a Tottenham victory is available with 10bet at the best industry odds of 7/2.
Liverpool are the deserved favourites for this game, but it could well be a close contest. Just two games in the last nine meetings between the clubs have seen the game decided by more than one goal, with four of those ending in stalemate.
Preference is again for the draw here, with both teams content in taking a share of the spoils, in a game where both sides have lots of attacking intent, but they could ultimately settle for extra time.
Individual Goal Scorers
The usual suspects are at the head of the betting in this market, with Liverpool striker, Mohamed Salah being a top-priced 9/2 with Betway to score first. However, Tottenham’s top scorer, Harry Kane is far weaker in this market to open the scoring – due to his battle for fitness for the Champions League final at 27/5, with Unibet. It remains to be seen if Kane actually starts the game in truth, so a check of the team news before the game could be a shrewd play.
Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is at 17/4 with Unibet and team mate, Roberto Firmino is a 6/1 chance with Black Type and Sporting Bet.
Tottenham have a fine supporting cast to compliment Harry Kane. South Korean forward, Son Heung-Min is a best priced 15/2 shot with Betway to silence the Liverpool faithful, while fellow attacker, Lucas Moura can be backed at 8/1 with Ladbrokes and William Hill. Danish midfielder, Christian Eriksen should also be worthy of consideration at 12/1 with Betfred.
The player who takes my eye though at bigger odds is Virgil van Dijk. The world’s most expensive defender has been in fantastic form all season, and an outside contender for the Ballon D’Or. The 22/1 on offer with the likes of Ladbrokes and Betway is too big to pass up on, as the big Dutchman is almost un-defendable at set-pieces. SportingBet also offer 17/2 on van Dijk to score any time as a lively alternative.
Other Side Bets
Goals do look likely in my view, and it seems as though the bookmakers tend to agree. RedZoneSports go the short, but best price, of 14/19 on Both Teams to Score in this game. It is a short-priced selection, but a likely winner.
In the hope of trying to find some value, we cast our net further to find the Match Result and Both Teams to Score market. We believe that both teams will score and the contest will end in a draw. Coral and 888Sport offer 7/2 on this particular outcome, which offers more value than individual markets.
Our Correct Score offering for this game is a 1-1 Draw after ninety minutes at 61/11 with 10bet. Although we have two very attacking teams on show in this game, it could be that due to the huge importance of the game may have an effect, and it will turn into a tense affair.
As I’ve already suggested, Liverpool are the worthy favourites with the bookmakers for this game, but Tottenham can make their presence felt and push the Reds all the way to extra time. What happens to transpire after that, who knows!
